We've created the diagram below to walk you through the 3 basic steps of credit card processing.  It will introduce you to some of the terminology used in the credit card industry.  For definitions of this terminology, click here.

Step 1:  The Transaction

The transaction is the first step in the credit card process.  As a Merchant, you process your customer's credit card either with a physical terminal and phone line, over the phone (if you are mail order / phone order), or by virtual terminal over a secure gateway via the internet.

Step 2:  The Capture

Once your transaction has been received by your processing center through your merchant account, they will authorize that the funds are available in your customer's bank account / credit card account and capture the funds.

Step 3:  The Settlement

Generally within 48 hours of capture, the funds are settled and deposited into your bank account less your discount rate and any per transaction fees that might apply.
